Drain Slope Calculator

Explanation

Drain slope — also called pitch or grade — is how much a horizontal drain or sewer line drops over its length. Too little and waste moves too slowly to clear solids; too much and the liquid can run out from under the solids. The familiar rule of thumb is 1/4 inch per foot, but the plumbing code sets the minimum by pipe size. This calculator works both ways: find the total drop from a run and a pitch, or find the slope from a measured drop, and check it against the IPC minimum.

How slope, run, and drop relate

Slope ties three numbers together: the horizontal run, the vertical drop (fall), and the pitch that connects them. Pitch is usually written in inches of fall per foot of run, but it is the same quantity expressed as a percent grade or a 1:X ratio. A 1/4 in/ft drain is a 2.08% grade, or about 1:48.

drop = slope × run  |  percent = (in/ft) ⁄ 12 × 100  |  ratio 1:X, X = 12 ⁄ (in/ft)

IPC minimum slope by pipe size

The International Plumbing Code sets the minimum slope of horizontal sanitary drains by diameter in Table 704.1. Larger pipes are allowed to run flatter because they carry more flow, but many plumbers still pitch residential drains at 1/4 in/ft regardless of size for a self-cleaning margin. Size the drain first — for example with the drainage fixture unit calculator — then set the slope for that diameter.

Notes and limitations

Minimum slopes exist to keep flow at roughly 2 ft/s at half-full — fast enough to scour solids without draining the trap seals. A line that is too flat lets solids settle and clog; one that is too steep (above about 1/2 in/ft on long runs) can let the water race ahead and strand the solids. Aim for the code minimum to 1/4 in/ft on most sanitary drains.

This calculator converts between pitch, run, and drop and checks the IPC 704.1 minimum for the chosen pipe size. It does not size the pipe for fixture load, design the vent system, or replace a stamped plumbing plan. Verify the governing code edition and any local amendments with the authority having jurisdiction.
